Conditioned Space

CONDITIONED SPACE is space which is heated or cooled and is subject to California's Title 24 energy conservation standards. Oakland's live/work code provides prescriptive heating standards which, if followed, qualify the space as not being considered conditioned space and therefore exempt from other requirements. Creation of newly conditioned space requires preparation of Title 24 energy calculations and full compliance with state standards. Any existing building which has previously been heated by any means is considered under Oakland's live/work code to be an alteration of conditioned space, a category of work with far more lenient requirements than newly conditioned space.
