Footprint FOOTPRINT (OF A BUILDING) The footprint of a building is the area of ground which it covers, whether or not it all touches the ground. In other words, overhangs, decks and balconies are all included by most definitions. Alteration of the footprint of an existing building to do live/work is considered an addition, something that is not presently permitted under Oakland Zoning regulations because it is considered new construction.
