Mezzanine MEZZANINE or MEZZANINE FLOOR, as defined in the UBC, is an intermediate floor placed within a room. A mezzanine normally must not exceed 1/3 of the area of the room into which it opens. It also must have 7'-0" vertical clearance at all points above and below it; otherwise it is considered a story. The live/work code relaxes both of these requirements and others, and has created two other classes of such space, sleeping mezzanines and built-in sleeping bunks.
