Commercial zones can often be ideal for live/work. They permit both new construction/ home occupation and conversion to live/work.

The Oakland Building Code distinguishes between live/work, or Residentially Oriented Joint Living and Work Quarters and work /live, or Commercially Oriented Joint Living and Work Quarters. Both are permitted and encouraged in commercial zones.
